Davenport University’s Accounting, Finance and Insurance Fair on October 1 gave students and alums the chance to showcase their skills and resumes to 38 potential employers, learn about career opportunities and connect with industry experts.

Held at Davenport’s W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus, the event is a win-win for students looking for work and employers looking for a great hire.

Cassidy Townsend, career and internship coach at Davenport, helped organize the event and is happy with the turnout. “It was great; the students were eager and excited, and most importantly, they were engaged in conversations with the employers,” she said.

Townsend’s advice to students preparing for any career fair is to relax, be themselves and approach potential employers with confidence and a smile. “The employers came for a reason, and that’s to meet as many Davenport students and alumni as possible. They have jobs to fill, and a simple conversation can lead to employment or an internship,” she said.

First-year accounting major Samuel Hernandez Castillo attended the career fair on a scouting mission to explore the different opportunities available in the field. “I came to the career fair to see what my options are,” said Castillo. “What I learned is that it’s not really how much experience you have or how close you are to graduation that makes an impression with the employers; showing them you’re interested in working for them is what makes you stand out.

Tommy Higgins, a finance major, is looking forward to graduating next year and thought the career fair would be a good place to start promoting himself. “While I’m not looking for a full-time finance position just yet, I will be looking in the near future, so it was nice to get my name out there, and hopefully I’m on at least one employer’s radar.”
