According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 3 million deaths occur in health care every year due to unsafe conditions. A new documentary, The Pitch, points out that a lack of innovation might be the root of what’s preventing the health care industry from improving that statistic.

Davenport University is hosting an advanced screening of this groundbreaking documentary that sheds light on the future of health care innovation. The Pitch will be shown on Davenport Campuses in Grand Rapids, Warren and Lansing on September 9 at 6 p.m. It’s a chance to see firsthand how even small ideas have the power to transform health care.

Joseph Brown, associate department chair in Health Information Management at Davenport University, said the documentary showcases how simple ideas can make a big impact.

“The Pitch emphasizes that change doesn’t just come from big companies—it can come from students, community members or industry leaders,” Brown said. “Health care faces many challenges, and innovation is key to overcoming them. The Pitch shows that even small ideas can drive big changes in health care.”

Directed by the creator of “To Err Is Human,” the film focuses on the challenges of integrating cutting-edge innovations like immersive tech and AI learning into medicine. It follows the journey of young innovator Reetam Ganguli, who developed Elythea, a lifesaving tool that identifies pregnancy risk factors to help save the lives of both mother and baby.

The Pitch offers a unique perspective on the collaborative efforts needed to bring new technologies to health care to create a safer future for patients.

This event hosted at Davenport is a chance to be inspired and connect with others who are passionate about making a difference. Yvette Pawlowski, a full-time faculty member in the Health Information Management Program, underscores the significance of this event.

“Our primary goal is to provide the cutting edge in education,” Pawlowski said. “Whether you’re pursuing a career in health informatics, nursing, or any other health care field, this film will challenge you to think differently and inspire you to take bold steps toward innovation.”

The screening also includes an opportunity to network with fellow students and professionals who are passionate about making a difference in healthcare.
