Davenport University and MyMichigan partner to increase patient care techs

Davenport University is hosting a five-week certified nurse assistant program in partnership with MyMichigan Health. The session is from July 15 to August 15 on Davenport’s Great Lakes Bay Regional Campus in Midland.

Dean of Davenport’s College of Health Professions, Amy Stahley, said the certified nurse assistant (CNA) program is a wonderful way for students to determine if health care is the right career path.

“If your goal is to become a nurse, beginning as a CNA offers an excellent opportunity to explore the nursing field,” Stahley said. “The ladder approach offers a significant advantage: you gain firsthand experience in nursing without making an immediate long-term commitment. Additionally, you can explore various health care settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and hospices, to determine which environment suits you best.”

MyMichigan Health is paying for students to go through the training, which will provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to complete their CNA certificate and be employed as a patient care technician at MyMichigan.

Rachel Peltier, R.N. is the manager of Educational Services and Development Department at MyMichigan Health. She said patient care technicians are an important part of MyHealth’s health care team.

“We’re excited about partnering with Davenport University to offer this unique opportunity to students to help us fill a need in our health care system,” said Peltier. “This kind of partnership strengthens the collegial relationship and allows MyMichigan to provide its employees with a portable and recognized credential as a CNA.”

Davenport’s program teaches participants how to provide basic nursing care and how to communicate with patients, family members and others on the health care team. Students also obtain the skills needed to assist patients with daily living activities.

The partnership between MyMichigan Health and Davenport University is ongoing, and more information on the program can be found on MyMichigan’s website.
