Students from 12 high schools participated in the inaugural Nursing Camp at the Warren Campus in July.

“We involved senior nursing students into the curriculum as active leaders and educators,” said Andrea Shaw, the Associate Department Chair of Nursing at Davenport University’s Warren Campus.

“The students learned skills from critical thinking to hands-on tasks such as assessment of vital signs, injections and bedside procedures,” Shaw said.

Angelique Ware, who is earning her bachelor’s degree in nursing, was one of the student volunteers at the camp.

“My roles were to help facilitate an exciting learning environment for the high school students,” Ware, a senior from Rochester Hills, Michigan, said. “I helped run the simulation labs, taught basic skills like taking vital signs and physical assessments. I made me feel good that I could share my passion for nursing with an audience that was eager to learn and craved advice.”

DU will host the camp again in 2018. High school juniors, seniors and recent grads can fill out an application if interested in attending.
