Davenport University’s 2026 Excellence in Business gala was a resounding success for students. The May 2 event raised $400,000 to support student scholarships and brought together business leaders, community members and supporters for an evening that included award-winning actor-comedian Martin Short.

The gala at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids featured Short in conversation with Davenport University President Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., which meant a night of laughter with a dose of inspiration and celebration for the nearly 500 guests who attended.

Short, an Emmy- and Tony Award-winning performer known for his work on “Saturday Night Live,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and numerous films, entertained the audience with his signature humor while also sharing thoughtful reflections on resilience, gratitude and his career.

“This was truly a special night for Davenport,” said Pappas. “To see our community come together in such a meaningful way, supporting our students while enjoying an incredible conversation with Martin Short, was inspiring. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make this evening such a success.”

It was also a special night for the retiring president. The gala was his final Excellence in Business Gala before his retirement in June, and he was honored with the Peter C. Cook Excellence in Business Award. The Board of Trustees selected Pappas for the Cook Award in recognition of his 50-year career in higher education and his 17 years of leadership at Davenport.

Since becoming president in 2009, Pappas has led Davenport through a period of transformation, including a 200% increase in graduation rates, expanded student support services and strengthened financial stability. He has been a strong advocate for working adults, veterans and first-generation students, helping broaden access to higher education.

In his acceptance speech for the award, Pappas thanked his family and friends, board members and his leadership team. He expressed confidence in the university’s future.

“The students are why we are here,” Pappas said. “Vision 2030 is bold, exciting and doable with AI and 90-credit degrees. The future is bright for Davenport. The people in this room also deserve credit for our success. You have supported students through your generosity. Davenport is a cool place, where dreams are realized, hard work actually pays off and where you can see lives changing in real time. The truth is, I love Davenport University. I always will.

“I humbly thank you for allowing me to be your president for 17 years. It has been the professional honor of my life. Thank you.”

Davenport’s annual Excellence in Business Gala is a cornerstone fundraising event that supports scholarships, helping more students achieve their educational and career goals. This year’s strong turnout and fundraising total reflect the continued commitment of the Davenport community to student success.
