“As a paramedic, you become a law enforcement officer, pastor, and counselor all in one day.”

Patrick Hatch started the EMT program at DU to get ahead in his Criminal Justice program, but after he started, he fell in love with the field. He quickly changed his mind and pursued his EMT degree full-time. Pat knew Davenport’s program would prepare him for success. Pat earned his degree from Davenport University in 1984. After obtaining his State of Michigan licensure, he began his 31 year occupation as a paramedic at Life EMS. He has held multiple roles at Life EMS including a field supervisor, training instructor, as well as an adjunct lab instructor at DU.

“Davenport’s training that I received more than 30 years ago is still relevant. We have advancements in equipment, technology and medications today. But, looking back I still use the same “grassroot” techniques and trainings with the new associates today that I learned at DU.” Patrick loves acting as a mentor to guide and lead new associates with his belief that “presentation creates perception.”

Patrick has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career for his heroic acts, including delivering more than ten babies. “The most important thing that I can do as an emergency responder, is treat people with respect. Everyone’s emergency is their emergency.  I act as a law enforcement officer, pastor and a counselor all in one day.” After responding to emergencies and working 24 hour shifts nearly 9 to10 times a month, Patrick enjoys relaxing and playing guitar, golf and hockey. He is also the vocalist for a local band called “Signal Point.” Patrick is also eagerly awaiting the start of Davenport Football.

We are extremely proud to honor Patrick with the 2015 College of Health Professions Alumni Award. With his commitment to patient care, detail, and overall patient satisfaction, he has become a proven teacher and leader in the field of EMS.
