Davenport University dedicated its athletic stadium to retiring President Richard J. Pappas, Ed.D., at a ceremony held at the university’s W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus on June 17. Inclement weather forced the event indoors.
The stadium was named the Richard J. Pappas Stadium, in honor of his 17 years of transformative leadership at the university, his 50-year career in higher education and his significant contributions to Davenport athletics.
The Davenport University Board of Trustees unanimously approved the stadium naming in recognition of Pappas’ lasting impact on the university, including his leadership in guiding Davenport’s successful transition to NCAA Division II and membership in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), as well as his commitment to student success, academic growth and institutional advancement.

Paula Cunningham, chair of the Davenport University Board of Trustees
Paula Cunningham, chair of the Davenport University Board of Trustees, announced that the Board conferred the title of President Emeritus on Pappas in recognition of his impressive career in higher education and at Davenport.
“In 17 years, Rick has transformed this university,” Cunningham said. She then directed her comments to him: “You have had a phenomenal career. You have given everything you have to give to this institution and to students. This is the culmination of a life well lived.”
The dedication ceremony, which was originally scheduled to be held at Davenport University’s Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, included remarks from university leaders and distinguished guests. Joshua Volk from Michigan State Senator Mark Huizenga’s office presented Pappas with a Legislative Tribute on behalf of the senator who was in session in Lansing.
Since becoming Davenport’s president in 2009, Pappas has led a period of significant transformation. Under his leadership, the university expanded academic offerings, enhanced student success initiatives and elevated its reputation as a career-focused institution serving students across Michigan and beyond.
Pappas also championed the growth of athletics at Davenport, supporting the development of the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex, the expansion of sport sponsorship opportunities and the university’s move to NCAA Division II competition.
“Congratulations to Rick on this well-deserved honor,” said Paul Lowden, executive director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Davenport. “I want to thank him for his unwavering support of Davenport University and our athletic department. His leadership, vision and commitment to our student-athletes helped position Davenport Athletics for long-term success, and we’re grateful for the impact he has had on our programs and the lives of our students.”
Pappas recently received the GLIAC’s highest honor, the Tom Donahue Service Award, becoming the first Davenport representative to earn the recognition.

Sparky McEwen, head football coach at Davenport University
“It’s truly an honor to be part of this moment as we celebrate the dedication of Davenport University’s athletic stadium in recognition of Dr. Pappas,” said Sparky McEwen, head football coach at Davenport University. “His commitment to education and to this university represents a career defined by impact, leadership and vision. The success we’ve built within our football program is just a small piece of the incredible legacy he leaves behind.”
Pappas reflected in his remarks on the connection between athletics and the values of higher education.
“As I look around this stadium, I cannot help but think about what a football stadium represents,” Pappas said. “It is where perseverance matters more than comfort. It is where teamwork triumphs over individual achievement. In many ways, those same values define a great university.”
Pappas said he hopes the stadium name will serve as a reminder of Davenport’s enduring mission.
“I hope they don’t ask in the future, ‘Who is that man they named the stadium for?’ Instead, I hope they ask, ‘What kind of university is this?’” Pappas said. “And I hope the answer is that this is a university that changes lives.”
Pappas credited the Davenport community for the university’s progress during his presidency.
“No university president accomplishes anything alone,” Pappas said. “Whatever success I have enjoyed over the past fifty years in higher education — and especially during my years leading this university — has been possible only because of extraordinary people who believed in a common mission.”
Pappas’ last day at the university will be June 30. Chief Financial Officer Anthony Anderson will take over July 1 as interim president of Davenport.
