Davenport University’s Student Life and Creative Dining Services recently teamed up on a new initiative to address food insecurity among students and provide them with an opportunity to shop for produce in a whole new way.

The first Panther Fresh Market Pop-Up-Shop took place on the W.A. Lettinga Grand Rapids Campus, allowing students to browse a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in a market-style environment and make their selections at no cost. Two separate shopping sessions were held to accommodate students’ busy schedules.

The event also promoted awareness of Student Life programs that provide ongoing access to food and professional resources, as well as the Panther Resource Closet (PRC), which provides students with free snacks, personal hygiene products and professional attire.

According to Margaret Paige, Student Life outreach coordinator, the event drew steady traffic throughout both sessions, with participants describing the atmosphere as welcoming, inclusive and fun.

Paige said many students expressed gratitude for the opportunity to access fresh, healthy foods at no cost, in a non-judgmental atmosphere, and that the market helped ease the financial burden of grocery shopping. One student in particular told Paige that she appreciated not being judged for needing a little extra help.

“The Panther Fresh Market Pop-Up Shop was a success because it leveraged the strengths of the two departments and blended wellness, accessibility, and community connection, turning a basic-needs initiative into a positive campus experience,” she said.
